日常生活中我們常常會中英夾雜，但有時候用的英文卻不見得是對的。科技公司的工程師捧油們應該對這些中式英文不陌生：「快點把東西 submit 給我」、「我們 sync 一下資訊」、「align 一下進度」、「這文案要 escalate 上去喔」，欸...但是，這些中式英文到底該怎麼用正確的英文說呢？【NG 英文 #工程師必看系列】第二彈終於回歸！一起學學正確的英文說法吧！

情境對話

今天研發部門的工程師來和 John 老師討論最新的課程設計，工程師就說：「我們的資訊好像沒 sync 到，我跟你講一下。」John 老師卻在旁邊聽得霧煞煞，這句中英夾雜的話，英文到底該怎麼說才對？

破解 NG 英文

其實除了「資訊 sync 一下」，小編也聽過身邊的工程師這樣講：「我們 align 一下進度」。第一次聽到的時候，還想說對方是在說什麼語言，怎麼完全聽不懂！

其實，工程師們要表達的是「我們同步一下我們的資訊」、「我們要讓進度一致」。先來看看這兩個單字：sync、align。

• sync / synchronize 使同時發生、同步

sync 是 synchronize 的縮寫，意思是「使同時發生、同步」。例如：

The sound on my computer is not synced with the video. Could you check if there is any problems with my computer?（我電腦的影音不同步。你能幫我檢查看看我電腦是不是有什麼問題嗎？）

Let’s sync our watch so that we could get there at the same time.（我們對一下手錶並把時間調整成一樣，這樣我們才能同時抵達。）

Don’t worry. Your Dropbox is syncing now. I’m sure you’ll see my file on Dropbox after your syncing is completed.（別擔心。你的 Dropbox 正在同步檔案。我相信同步完成之後你就會在 Dropbox 上看到我的檔案了。）

• align 對齊、與...保持一致、與...結盟

align 這個字是「對齊、與...保持一致、與...結盟」的意思，舉幾個例子：

The student carefully aligned the desks in rows in the classroom.（那個學生仔細地一排一排對齊教室的桌子。）

Many people aren’t aligned with this social movement.（很多人不支持這次的社會運動。）

Our service is closely aligned with the goals and vision of the company.（我們的服務與公司的目標和遠景緊密一致。）

「資訊一致、對等」、「進度一致」，英文該怎麼說？

回到情境對話，想要表達「兩個部門之間資訊要一致」，或是「合作夥伴之間的進度要一致」，到底該怎麼用英文說呢？

1. sync up

可以運用 sync up 這個片語，英英解釋其中一個意思為「To coordinate with someone else so that all parties have the same plan, information, schedule, etc.（與他人協調，好讓每一方都有共同的計畫、資訊、規劃等等）」。舉個例子：

Let’s sync up one last time before we demonstrate our new product next Monday.（禮拜一展示新產品之前，我們再最後確認一下大家的資訊都對等。）

2. on the same page

也可以搭配這個片語使用：on the same page，字面上是「在同一頁上」，實際就是要表達「進度相同、達成共識、訊息一致」，例如：

I need you to sync up with your partner to make sure that you’re on the same page.（我要你和你的夥伴對一下彼此的資訊，好確保你們資訊一致且有共識。）

如果有人開會恍神、或是看起來很困惑的樣子，在台上報告的你就可以這樣問台下的人：

Are we on the same page?（我們現在概念是一致的嗎？）

3. catch up

如果你休假了五天，回來上班後想要與同事更新最新的工作資訊，可以用 catch up 這個片語，意思是「了解（或討論）最新情況」。例如說：

Are you free at 3 p.m.? I need to catch up on the latest progress of the project.（你三點的時候有空嗎？我必須了解一下專案的最新進度。）
